IFTA & Form 2290
Each truck shows whether it owes IFTA and the heavy vehicle use tax, from its weight and axles.
The rules applied
- IFTA: two axles and a GVWR or registered weight over 26,000 lb, three or more axles at any weight, or a combination over 26,000 lb.
- Form 2290 (HVUT): a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lb or more — the registered weight.
- A 26 ft box truck at 26,000 lb or less on two axles owes neither.
On the truck
Enter GVWR, axles and registered weight on the truck. The truck form shows the answer live with the reason, and the trucks list shows two pills: IFTA / No IFTA / IFTA? and 2290 / No 2290 / 2290?. An asterisk means the answer is assumed from the truck type — enter the numbers to make it firm. A question mark means there isn't enough data yet.
IFTA only applies to trucks that cross state lines. This tells you which trucks qualify; it doesn't file the quarterly return.
